Italian state-owned lender Cassa Depositi e Prestiti SpA said Tuesday it has sold nearly 58.26 million shares, or a 1.6% stake, of state-controlled Eni SpA (E, ENI.MI) between Sept. 24 and Oct. 9 for about 1.01 billion euros ($1.3 billion).

In a press release, the holding company said the operation completes the planned sale of a 3.3% stake in the energy company. CDP had already sold a 1.7% stake in Eni between Aug. 7 and Sept. 13 for more than EUR1 billion.

CDP has reduced its stake in Eni to 25.76% or about 936.18 million shares.

As previously agreed, the lender will use proceeds from these transactions to buy Eni's nearly 30% stake in natural-gas transmission company Snam SpA (SGR.MI).
