The Italian government expects the country's biggest power utility to take a stake in a pipeline project to bring Azeri natural gas to the country, a top government official who covers energy said Tuesday.

"I can't see why Enel won't have a stake in TAP," said Industry Ministry Undersecretary Claudio De Vincenti at a conference in
Rome , referring to the Trans-Adriatic Pipeline project.

Enel SpA (ENEL.MI) is discussing entering the TAP project.

"We (as the government) used our moral suasion for this to happen and it is now up to the parties involved to agree (on the stake)," said Mr. De Vincenti.
