The European Union's antitrust authorities are looking into a new German energy law to assess its compatibility with EU state aid rules after receiving a complaint, a spokesman said Thursday.

"We are asserting the implications of these new rules on state aid, in particular for the rate for repurchasing electricity and also when it comes to the exemptions for large scale energy users," said Antoine Colombani, spokesman for competition issues at the European Commission, during a regular press briefing. "This is something we are still gathering information on," he explained.

Mr. Colombani declined to reveal the origin of the complaint.
