Russian gas giant OAO Gazprom (GAZP.RS) sees a breakthrough on its eastern program, Alexei Miller, the company's chief executive, told reporters in Yakutsk Tuesday.

Making a final investment decision on the Chayanda field and the construction of the Yakutiya-Khabarovsk-Vladivostok pipeline has put "the talks on the eastern route of (gas) supplies to
China into practical level," Mr. Miller said.

"This is without a doubt a breakthrough moment in our work in the east of the country," he said.

The company's chief executive told President Vladimir Putin in late October that the company would spend 1.2 trillion rubles ($37.9 billion) launching a gas field and pipeline to Vladivostok in the country's far east by the end of 2017.

Mr. Putin then said that developing Chayanda and another giant field, Kovytka, is the next stage of
Russia 's eastern gas program.
