China Petrochemical Corp., also known as Sinopec Group, has signed a preliminary agreement with ConocoPhillips (COP) to study shale gas development in the Sichuan basin.

The agreement, signed Dec. 21, will involve Conoco drilling two wells in a 3,917.53 square kilometer section known as the Qijiang block, Sinopec said Tuesday on its website.
