Italy 's biggest natural gas grid and storage company by volume, Friday said gas imports from Algeria have returned to normal levels.

Current import levels are about 75 million cubic meters a day, said a Snam spokesman. "Levels returned to normality overnight," he added.

Italy imports around 90% of its gas needs, and the majority of these come from Algeria and Russia .

Early Wednesday, militants attacked the In Amenas gas facility, which is operated in a joint venture between BP PLC (BP), Statoil ASA (STO) and Algerian state-owned energy company Sonatrach. The militant group al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb, or AQIM, claimed responsibility for the attack, and a spokesman for the group said they took 41 hostages.

In Amenas is located in the east of the country, around 1,300 kilometers from the capital
Algiers and near the border with Libya .
