Eni SpA (E), Italy 's biggest energy company by market value, Monday said it has started natural gas production from the Menzel Ledjmet East field in Algeria , and predicts the development will boost its daily output to 100,000 barrels of oil equivalent this year in the North African country.

In a statement, Eni said the production at the field, located in Block 405b about 1,000 kilometers from
Algiers , is jointly operated with the Algerian state-owned energy company Sonatrach. Output started Thursday, it added.

Eni's 2012 daily production in
Algeria was about 80,000 BOE. The Rome-based company said it was the leading producer in Algeria last year.
