European Union antitrust authorities said Friday they plan to re-impose a fine on Italian energy giant ENI SpA (E) and one of its units for recidivism in participating in a synthetic rubber cartel, after an EU court had annulled an earlier decision to do so.

The European Commission, which has antitrust powers in the EU, said in a statement that it has now addressed the court's concerns and is therefore re-imposing the 90.75-million-euro ($119 million) fine, because the companies committed the same infringement twice.

In 2006, the commission fined ENI and its unit Versalis, previously Polimeri Europa, EUR272.25 million in relation to the synthetic rubber cartel.
