Japan is considering resuming talks with India on bilateral cooperation in nuclear energy development, the top government spokesman said Monday, Kyodo News reported.

"We have judged it sensible to negotiate an accord with
India on nuclear cooperation," Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga told reporters.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is expected to promote Japanese exports of nuclear power plants to
India under such an accord, when he meets with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on May 29 in Tokyo , sources close to the matter said.

The move comes despite widespread concerns over safety of nuclear power generation following the crisis at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear complex, triggered by the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami in northeastern
Japan .

Nuclear cooperation talks between the two countries, launched in 2010, have been suspended since the nuclear disaster.

Earlier this month,
Japan concluded similar nuclear accords with the United Arab Emirates and Turkey during Mr. Abe's visits there.
