China 's power consumption in May totaled 426.9 billion kilowatt hours, an increase of 5% from a year earlier, the National Energy Administration said on Friday.

The growth rate was slower than April's 6.8% rise, but faster than March's 2% expansion.

Power consumption in the January-May period was 2.0573 trillion kWh--up 4.9%, the administration said in a statement on its website.

That was down from a 5.8% rise in the same period last year.
