U.S. energy giant Chevron Corp (CVX) has delayed plans to drill for shale gas at its field in the Silistea area, in the eastern Hungarian county of Vaslui, in response to protests against fracking, a controversial process used to extract gas and oil from shale deposits, news agency Mediafax reports Thursday.

"Our priority is to conduct activities in a safe and environmentally responsible manner consistent with the permits under which we operate," Chevron said in a statement.

Thursday saw a fourth day of protests in Silistea village against Chevron's plans to use hydraulic fracturing, or fracking to drill for shale gas.

The technology consists of pumping a water-sand mixture into underground rock layers to free the trapped oil or gas. However, the villagers are worried that the technique would affect the environment and said they were prepared to do "what it takes" to prevent the start of the work.

"Chevron remains committed to responsible shale gas development and to building constructive and positive relationships with the communities where we operate," the U.S. company said.

Chevron has permits to explore for shale gas in three localities in Vaslui county. In early October, the company received authorization to drill its first well in Silistea. Work was supposed to start Wednesday, but the protesters prevented Chevron's bulldozer and excavators from accessing the site.
