The government of Lithuania assigned company Litgas to start negotiations with Norwegian oil company Statoil on liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies for Lithuanian LNG terminal, announced prime minister on Monday.

"We hope that technical details will be reconciled in June. Today the cabinet sent Statoil information on authorization for Litgas to continue negotiations," said Lithuanian Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius at a press conference.

Butkevicius declined to comment on possible Norwegian LNG prices and their comparability with those offered by Gazprom, a Russian gas company.

According to the business news website vz.lt, the prices of Statoil's LNG are more attractive than the price required by Gazprom.

If Statoil were to get the contract, the company would provide LNG to the new LNG terminal in Lithuania's port city of Klaipeda.

The terminal scheduled to start operations in early December should ensure energetic independency and supply security.

Lithuanian currently is fully dependent on natural gas supplies from Gazprom.
