Gas prices for Lithuanian customers will be reduced by 20 percent averagely from July 1 this year, the National Commission for Energy Control and Prices (NCC) of Lithuania announced on Thursday.

The new price for gas, which has been approved by the board of Lithuanian gas company Lietuvos Dujos, will be in place from July 1 to December 31 this year, the NCC said in a statement.

"I am happy that this task has been implemented and competitive gas price has been achieved for Lietuvos Dujos," Lithuania's Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius said in the statement released on Thursday.

"People of Lithuania, who are using gas for cooking or heating, will see this reduction in their real life," he added.

Depending on the quantity of the gas used, the price has been set accordingly from 1.42 Litas (about 0.56 U.S. dollars) to 2.28 Litas for 1 cubic meter.

Earlier in May, Lietuvos Dujos reached accord with Russia on gas price reduction until 2015. Lithuania currently is fully dependent on Russian gas supplies.
