Europe'scentre-right, the European Peoples' Party, whose members include Greece's former New Democracy government and Angela Merkel's Christian Democratic Union has told Greece to pay their debts, ahead of the Eurogroup meeting.

“Existing commitments must be respected,"said Manfred WeberMEP, Chairman of theEPPGroup in the European Parliament in a debate on the meeting.

Although Greeks voted overwhelmingly for an end to austerity, GermanMEPWeber was unimpressed. “The Greek people have voted democratically and we respect their vote. But they have elected a new government, not a new state. MrTsiprasmust learn that," he said.

Weber also took aim at Syriza's junior coalition partners, "“I find it very worrying for our common European future thatSyrizais building an alliance with a populist party which regularly takes clear anti-Jewish positions."

Speaking about Ukraine, thecentre-rightleader said, "Europe needs to stand up for democracy and freedom."

He added that if the current Merkel/Hollandeinitiative to end the Ukraine conflict fail, "the EU will have to take even more stringent sanctions against Russia," Weber warned.
