Russia hopes that if a nuclear deal is reached after ongoing negotiations between the West and Tehran, Moscow will boost nuclear power plant construction in Iran, integrated company NIAP-ASE-AEP Director Valery Limarenko said on June 2 in Moscow.

“We expect that after the end of negotiations all sanctions will be lifted and our cooperation related to this construction will continue within the framework of existing contracts,” Limarenko, whose company is part of Rosatom, told a press conference on June 2 during the VII Atomexpo conference and exhibition in Moscow, responding to a question from New Europe.

“We have built one unit in Iran and you remember this facility it was built by the Germans but after the sanctions the Russian experts had to build this unit and integrate the equipment supplied by German companies. Today in fact I’m meeting with the Iranian colleagues and I have a confirmation that the unit is running excellently,” Limarenko said, adding that its period of guaranteed maintenance is coming to the end and his company is planning to sign a contract in September.

“Now there are negotiations 5+1 and as I understand although these negotiations are very tough they are developing to the mutual satisfaction of both parties and as I understand all countries involved in these negotiations support Iran in pursuing peaceful use of nuclear energy,” Limarenko said, referring to the negotiating teams from Iran and the Group 5+1 (the five permanent UN Security Council members plus Germany). “This is the aim of these negotiations to concentrate the Iranians on peaceful nuclear facilities,” he said, adding that a positive outcome would favour Russian-Iranian peaceful nuclear cooperation.
