1ST GREEK-TURKISH ENERGY FORUM (6/5/2003)

On May 8th and 9th the first Greek-Turkish Energy Forum will take place in Athens. The Forum is being jointly organised by the Athens based Institute of Energy and Development for SE Europe (INED) and the Turkish National Energy Forum. The Forum has been conceived as a platform for the discussion and presentation of major energy projects and the review of current and potential developments in the broad energy field where both countries have extensive interests. Greece and Turkey are already co-operating for the linking of their natural gas networks and their electricity grid systems. Senior government officials and company executives from both Turkey and Greece will participate at the Forum in what appears to be a high level meeting backed by Development minister Mr. Akis Tsochatzopoulos and Dr. Mehmet Hilmi Guler, Turkey’s minister for Energy and Natural Resources. According to the conference’s programme the two ministers will open the conference in a special session in the evening of May 8th at the Intercontinental Hotel where the conference is scheduled to take place.Other speakers include Mr.Panayiotis Koutsikos, chairman of the Greek-Turkish Business Council and Mr.Sarik Tara, chairman of the corresponding Turkish-Greek Business Council. A total of 24 speakers will participate and make presentations at the conference covering a wide range of energy related subjects including natural gas, electricity, petroleum,legal framework, harmonisation, investment and regulatory matters. According to conferece convener and publisher of ENERGIA, Mr. Costis Stambolis “it is anticipated that by establishing the Forum on an annual basis, altermatively in Greece and Turkey, a butter understanding and appreciation of problems and opportunities will be obtained at various levels between the parties involved, leading to an ovwerall improvement of Greek-Turkish relations. The objectives forum are in line with the principles and goals of the Greek –Turkish Business Council, the Greek-Turkish Chamber of Commerce, the National Energy Forum of Turkey and the Institute od Energy and Development for S.E. Europe. These the important organisations have agreed to co-operate closely with the Conference’s steering committee”.
