NBG Governor Mr Theodoros Karatzas and Bulgaria’s Prime Minister Mr Simeon Saxe-Coburg Gotha met on the occasion of the two-day conference programme organized in Sofia last week by the National Bank of Greece. During the meeting, which took place in a particularly friendly atmosphere, the two men exchanged views on the Bulgarian economy, now in the EU accession process, and the contribution of the banking sector and especially the NBG Group to this endeavour. Mr Theodoros Karatzas presented the NBG Group’s strategy and immediate targets in Bulgaria in the context of a press conference attended by a large number of media representatives from Bulgaria and Greece. After the presentation, Mr T. Karatzas, Messrs T. Pantalakis and A. Tamvakakis, NBG Deputy Governors, Mr A. Leopoulos, NBG’s General Manager of International Activities and Mr. S. Vatev, General Manager of UBB responded to questions from the press. During the event, it was announced that Ethniki General Insurance and UBB will jointly establish an insurance company in Sofia, designed to offer a broad range of insurance products to the Bulgarian market with the support of the Group’s local network; also that the framework is being set up for the promotion of mutual fund products in the local market. Based on its strategy for building a strong regional identity, the NBG Group shall fully utilize its know-how and expertise so as to continue to provide the Bulgarian market with the full range of financial products and services, thus further enhancing its leading presence in the country.
