Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs urged Greece on Friday to pursue its target for covering 20% of its energy needs from renewable energy sources by 2020. He also referred to the importance of the Burgas-Alexandroupolis pipeline project for the diversification of the energy supply to the European countries.
“If the project go through fast, it will enable Caspian oil to reach Europe,” he said in a joint interview with the Development Minister Dimitris Sioufas in Athens.
Mr Piebalgs said that the completion of the Greek–Turkish natural gas pipeline was a historic achievement while he committed the European Commission to examine soon Greece’s application for exemption of third party access to the Greek Italian gas pipeline which is scheduled to be completed by 2012.
