BRUSSELS (Dow Jones)--The European Commission Friday ruled Slovakia's carbon dioxide national allocation for the period 2008-12 should be granted an extra 1.7 million allowances, boosting Slovakia's total allocation to 32.6 million allowances for the period.
Slovakia previously sought an additional 4 million allowances, arguing some new nuclear capacity wouldn't be operational before the end of 2012. The European Commission decided a partial increase of some 1.7 million allowances was justified.
The European Commission said it would be more stringent about reducing CO2 emissions during the second phase of the European Emissions Trading Scheme, spanning 2008-12.
The European Commission overalloted CO2 allowances during the first phase, which spans 2005-2007.
