Russian President Dmitry Medvedev will visit the central Asian nation of Uzbekistan this week to meet with Uzbek President Islam Karimov, the Kremlin said Tuesday.
"Dmitry Medvedev will make a state visit to Uzbekistan on Jan. 22-23, 2009," the Kremlin said in a statement, adding that the visit was taking place at Karimov's invitation.
A Kremlin spokeswoman contacted by AFP declined to say what Medvedev would discuss with Karimov or give details about the program for his visit.
Uzbekistan, an authoritarian former Soviet republic that maintains close ties to Moscow, is an oil and gas exporter.
