National Iranian Gas Exporting Co. (NIGEC) chief Seyed Reza Kasaeizadeh traveled to Turkmenistan Tuesday to hold talks on the development of a large Turkmen natural gas field by the Islamic republic, the oil ministry's official Shana news Web site reports Tuesday.

The two countries agreed in late December 2008 to develop a Turkmen gas field lying near Iran's border with Turkmenistan, Shana cites a report from NIGEC's public relations office as saying.

With Iran's investment in the development of Turkmenistan's gas field, the Islamic republic's natural gas imports from the country is slated to rise, reports Shana.

PetroPars managing director Gholamreza Manouchehri accompanied Kasaeizadeh on the trip to Turkmenistan, according to Shana.

Iran's Oil Minister Gholam Hossein Nozari said in early January the two countries agreed to "assess and study" a "plan for the development of Turkmenistan's gas field aiming to produce 10 billion cubic meters of gas a year," according to Iranian press reports.
