Turkey's Dardanelles Strait has reopened to shipping, an official from the coastal safety agency said Thursday, according to the Ihlas News Agency, or IHA.

The official said northbound Dardanelles Strait tanker traffic opened from 1020 GMT and southbound tanker traffic opened from 1000 GMT Thursday.

The Dardanelles Strait was closed earlier Thursday to both northbound and southbound traffic from 0120 GMT due to poor visibility caused by dense fog.

The Turkish Bosporus and Dardanelles straits, the only sea route between the Black Sea and the Mediterranean, are important for Russian and Central Asian oil exports.

The Straits are often closed in the winter due to winds, snow and fog.
