Romania imported about 2 billion cubic meters of natural gas from Russia in 2009, less than half the 5 billion cubic meters imported in 2008, data from the country's energy watchdog ANRE showed Thursday, news agency Mediafax reported.

Romgaz Medias was the top gas supplier on the Romanian free market, with a 27.4% share in 2009, followed by Interagro group, with a 16.1% share.

Romania 's leading oil company OMV Petrom SA (SNP.RO) ranked third with a 11.2% market share.

On the regulated market, E.ON Gaz
Romania and GDF Suez Romania supplied over 90% of the natural gas delivered to households and medium-sized companies.
