Spanish power utility Iberdrola SA (IBE.MC) has plans to build 5 gigawatts in offshore wind power capacity in Europe , compared with 4.8 GW it previously announced, Chairman Ignacio Galan said Wednesday.

The European parks are planned for the Irish Sea, as well as off the coasts of Scotland, Germany, France and Spain, Galan said at a press conference ahead of the company's annual shareholders' meeting Friday.

Galan said the construction of wind parks off the Spanish coast won't happen soon, as there are few sites off the Spanish coast with water depth of 30 to 40 meters that are suitable for current offshore wind technology. Most of those sites are too close to the coast and could cause visual impacts that may disturb the tourism industry, he said.

"The technology still has its limitations in regards to sea depth," Galan said.

In the
U.K. , water depths are much lower in general and wind parks can more easily be built at distances further away from the coast, Galan said.

The company has licenses to build offshore wind parks in the
North Sea off the U.K. with a capacity of 7.2 GW, which it plans to build with Swedish group Vattenfall.
