Russian state gas company OAO Gazprom (GAZP.RS) has received less than 10% of the money it is owed by Ukraine 's Naftogaz for August gas supplies, Gazprom spokesman Sergei Kupriyanov was quoted as saying Tuesday.

"Some payments are being received, but it's teardrops at the moment. It's a long way to full payment at this speed," he said, Interfax news agency reported.

Ukrainian Energy Minsiter Eduard Stavitskiy was quoted earlier Tuesday as saying
Ukraine has started sending payments for the $882 million bill.

Gazprom last week demanded that
Ukraine settle the overdue bill, raising fears of a repeat of the supply problems that have disrupted winter deliveries to Europe twice in recent years.

Previous payment disputes led Gazprom to cut flows to
Ukraine in 2006 and 2009, disrupting supplies to some European countries that receive Russian natural gas via Ukraine .
