An unnamed foreign investor is interested in
a project for the construction of a 2,000 megawatt nuclear power plant (NPP) in
Bulgaria, local media reported on Wednesday quoting a senior official of the
left-wing ABV party.
The potential investor, a non-Russian, does not seek
from the government any financial guarantees nor commitments regarding the
purchase of electricity generated by the planned NPP, state-run Bulgarian news
agency BTA quoted Rumen Petkov, deputy chairman of left-wing ABV party, as
telling journalists.
The investor has senta letter to the government to
declare his interest in the project and request a meeting, Petkov also
said.
The Belene NPP project, launched in the late 1980s, had been frozen
for nearly two decades before Bulgaria hired Russia's Atomstroyexport in 2008 to
build the NPP. However, after the venture made little progress due to pricing
disagreements between Bulgaria and Russia, the government in Sofia decided to
halt the project over concerns about its economic feasibility and instead
explore the opportunities to add a new unit at its existing NPP in
Kozloduy.
