The European Commission Tuesday cleared French utilities Suez (SZE.FR) and Gaz de France (1020848.FR) to jointly buy a gas-fired power plant in the U.K.

Each company is taking a 50% stake in the 1,875 megawatt Teesside power station, Europe's largest combined-cycle gas turbine plant.

Teesside Power Limited was previously owned by Goldman Sachs (GS) and Cargill, with 30% and 70% stakes, respectively.
