German engineering giant Siemens on Wednesday won the go-ahead to construct a 310 million pounds (510 million U.S. dollars) wind turbine production plant at the Port of Hull in North East England.

The dockside factory, facing the North Sea, will assemble up to 300 wind turbines a year in Hull in a project creating jobs for up to 1,000 in the city area. It represents one of the biggest ever developments in the port.

The 'green light' for the green factory was given unanimous support Wednesday by Hull City Council's Planning Committee.

Siemens announced a program in which between 50 and 100 wind turbines will be installed and assembled from the Hull facility in the first year of operation, with a yearly amount of 200 turbine possible afterwards, increasing potentially up to 300.

The first turbines will be completed in 2017, a year when Hull will enjoy being in the national spotlight as Britain's City of Culture.
