US' Coal Use in 2018 Expected to be Lowest in 39 Years

Coal consumption in the U.S. this year is expected to reach its lowest level of the past 39 years, according to the country's Energy Information Administration (EIA) on Wednesday. Total U.S. coal consumption this year is estimated to decline to 691 million short tons (MMst). If this level is realized for 2018, this will be the lowest coal consumption in the U.S. since 1979, the EIA said in a statement.

Emissions from Advanced Economies Set to Rise in 2018

The world's advanced economies will see an uptick in their carbon dioxide emissions this year, bucking a five year-long decline, according to the International Energy Agency's statement on Tuesday. According to latest available energy data, energy-related CO2 emissions in North America, the European Union and other advanced economies in the Asia Pacific grew as higher oil and gas use more than offset declining coal consumption.

The U.S.' proven crude oil and natural gas reserves set new records in 2017, the country's Energy Information Administration (EIA) announced Thursday. Proved reserves of crude oil increased 19.5 percent from the end of 2016, to reach a record level of 39.2 billion barrels in 2017, the EIA said in a statement, adding this surpassed the previous peak level of 39 billion barrels set in 1970.
