Bids For Large Lignite Mine In Northern Greece Are Expected Friday (29/09/2006)

Bids for the hiring and exploitation of the large lignite mine in Vevi, in the northern town of Florina are expected to be announced later Friday. The Vevi tender practically puts an end to Public Power Corp’s exlusive right for the exploitation of the lignite mines in Greece. PPC, is the former monopoly of the country’s electricity market. Mytilineos Group along with Hellenic Technodomiki have already announced their interest for the tender. According to press, gas producer Kopelouzos and constructors Terna and Michaniki are also expected to submit bids. Renewable sources energy producer Rokas has hinted that it may participate also. Public Power Corp is expected to take part in the tender. According to the terms of the tender, the hiring of the mine is for 15 years, while the contract can be renewed every five years. The duration of the hiring can last up to 50 years. Vevi’s capacity is estimated at 95 million tonnes, which can support a plant with 300=350 MW capacity.
