Palestinian police sealed off large parts of this West Bank city Thursday in an unprecedented operation to secure U.S. President George W. Bush's first-ever visit to the sometimes volatile Palestinian territories.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas was to receive Bush later Thursday at his walled headquarters, which was repainted and had its helipad repaved ahead of the meeting. Residents in buildings around Abbas' compound were told to stay away from windows and balconies, and Palestinian security officials said U.S. snipers were being deployed in the area.

Bush arrived in Israel on Wednesday, and was to spend much of Thursday in the West Bank, including a pilgrimage to Jesus' traditional birth grotto in biblical Bethlehem.
