Iran To Resume Gas Supply To Turkey Within Days

Iran will resume shipping natural gas to Turkey within days, Turkey's prime minister reportedly said Thursday.

Iran cut gas supplies to Turkey Jan. 7, citing a cold snap and shortage of supplies from Turkmenistan, Turkish media said - despite Iran's promise not to interrupt shipments again after reducing the gas flow last year during another cold snap.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Iran would resume shipments before Jan. 14, according to a report on private NTV television.

The cut last year sparked debate over Turkey's need to reduce energy dependence on Russia and Iran, its two main suppliers. Turkey uses natural gas in industry and to heat homes.

After Russia, Iran is Turkey's second-largest supplier of natural gas, now providing some 20-22 million cubic meters a day through a 2,580 kilometer pipeline.

Turkey also imports some liquefied natural gas from Nigeria and Algeria.
