Poland's second largest power group, Poludniowy Koncern Energetyczny, or PKE, will put on line a new coal and biomass-fired 460-megawatt power station in Bedzin in the first quarter of 2009, PKE said Wednesday.
The new unit, which will emit 25% less carbon dioxide than the most efficient generators in Poland.
PKE is also planning to build another two power stations, with capacity of 800 and 1,000 MW each. Company spokesman Pawel Gniadek said Wednesday that by the end of March, PKE would decide on the sites of these and possibly select partners to build them.
Partners being included include E.ON AG (EOA.XE), RWE AG (RWE.XE), ESB International, Sempra Energy (SRE) and JES Energy.
In the long run, PKE plans to maintain its capacity close to the current level, at around five gigawatts, but needs to replace old capacity, which doesn't meet environmental standards.
