Turkish construction firm ENKA Insaat (ENKAI.IS) said Monday it has signed a preliminary agreement with Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEP) to cooperate on a nuclear energy project in Turkey, Ihlas news agency, or IHA, reported.
In a statement to the Istanbul Stock Exchange or IMKB, ENKA said the agreement was signed Friday but it didn't provide further details.
However, Turkish daily Vatan said ENKA and KEPCO signed the agreement to jointly participate in a tender to be held by the Turkish government Feb. 21 for the construction of Turkey's first ever nuclear plant.
The Turkish government previously said it plans to build three nuclear plants with a total capacity of about 5,000 megawatts to become operational in 2012 in a bid to prevent a possible energy shortage and reduce dependence on foreign energy supplies.
Earlier plans to build plants at Sinop on the Black Sea coast and Akkuyu on the Mediterranean were ditched after protests.
