Russia wants natural gas producers to pay more tax, the Interfax news agency reported Tuesday, citing Deputy Finance Minister Sergei Shatalov.

Shatalov said the so-called mineral resources extraction tax for gas has remained unchanged for three years, while producers are enjoying higher profits as gas prices rise.

He also backed growing support - particularly from the Natural Resources Ministry - for an increase in tax on associated gas, a side-product of crude production that oil companies often flare.

Russian oil companies are currently lobbying for a reduction in their own tax burden, arguing excessive export duties discourage them from reinvesting in new production.

Gas sector taxes are a fraction of those levied on Russia's oil sector.
