The speed with which new nuclear power plants can be built will be key to the decision on which atomic reactor designs are selected for use in the U.K., The Times of London reports Monday, citing the government.

Four nuclear reactor designs - from French nuclear giant Areva, Japan's Toshiba Corp's (6502.TO) Westinghouse Electric Co., GE Hitachi (GE) (HIT) and Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. - are being assessed as part of a push to build a new generation of U.K. nuclear power plants.

According to a spokesman for the Nuclear Installations Inspectorate, "speed of deployment" is one of the main criteria being used to assess the designs, followed by safety, security and compatibility with U.K. engineering standards, the newspaper says.

"The designs must be deployable by 2016-22," the spokesman said, according to the newspaper.

In January, the U.K. government gave the go-ahead for companies to build a new generation of nuclear power reactors in the country.
