Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Timoshenko Monday said state-run gas supplier Naftogaz Ukrainy owed Russian energy giant OAO Gazprom (GAZP.RS) $1.07 billion on Jan. 1 and won't pay 2008 prices for gas it received in November and December, Russian news agencies reported Monday.
Timoshenko said Ukraine won't pay $179.50 per thousand cubic meters for the gas it received in November and December, Interfax reported, as this is the price for 2008 deliveries.
Gazprom last week said it will cut supplies of additional Russian gas to Ukraine if the country doesn't repay a debt of $1.5 billion by Feb. 11.
Gazprom said $1 billion of this total was for gas supplied before Jan. 1.
Ukraine gets its imported gas from Central Asia via Gazprom pipelines through a number of intermediary companies.
Gazprom's decision to cut off gas supplies to Ukraine in January 2006 resulted in supply reductions to Western European countries for several days because they get gas through pipelines that cross Ukraine.
