Terna SpA (TRN.MI), Italy's biggest electricity grid by capacity Wednesday urged the country's central and local governments to speed up approving new power lines to help the growth of electricity generated from wind.

In a statement, Terna said the expected growth of wind power in the peninsula makes the development of the grid a "necessity."

The Rome-based company in January said it will invest more than EUR3.1 billion over the next five years to strengthen energy security by boosting interconnection with neighboring countries and eliminating bottlenecks in the domestic market.

Last year, wind power had an installed capacity of 634 megawatts, or a 30% gain from 2006, according to data provided by the country's association Anev.
