Construction is expected to begin next year on the largest store and treatment plant in Scotland to deal with radioactive waste, the BBC reports on its Web site Wednesday.

Plans were approved by Highland Council local authority and forwarded to the Scottish Government for consideration, where ministers decided not to call in the planning applications.

Work is due to start next year on the treatment plant, while construction on the store is to begin in 2011.

The facilities costing a combined total of more than GBP300 million will be built on land next to the Dounreay nuclear power complex in Caithness, the BBC reports.

Dounreay Site Restoration Ltd. is quoted as saying the store would hold almost 200,000 cubic meters of waste from the defunct Caithness nuclear energy plant on the northern coast of Scotland.
