Armenia on Wednesday began importing natural gas from Iran, the Iran Daily newspaper reports Thursday.

Armenia will use Iran's gas to generate electricity that will then be exported to the Islamic Republic as payment for the natural gas imports, according to the daily newspaper.

National Iranian Gas Export Co. (NIGEC) chief Seyyed Reza Kasaeizadeh headed a delegation of Iranian energy officials that met with Armenian energy officials on Tuesday to finalize details related to the gas deliveries, Iran Daily said, citing a statement from NIGEC's office of public relations.

Kasaeizadeh said the daily volume of gas deliveries will initially be around 2 million cubic meters, and could rise to 4 million cubic meters in 2011, reports Iran Daily.

The second and final Armenian section of a 2.3 billion cubic meter gas pipeline linking the Islamic republic to Armenia was inaugurated in December, Iran Daily said.
