French nuclear engineering group Areva SA (CEI.FR) said Wednesday it plans to cooperate with Russian nuclear group Rosatom on safety instrumentation and control systems for the first four VVER-type reactors to be built in Russia.

The agreement includes work on two new 1,200 megawatt reactors at existing sites in Novovoronezh and Leningrad.

The companies also signed a first engineering contract and a letter of intent for future contracts, Areva said without elaborating.

The agreement is similar to one last year for the modernization of the Kola nuclear power plant, using Areva's TELEPERM XS digital safety instrument control system platform, the French company added.
