Italy's energy regulator and the antitrust body said Wednesday Eni SpA (E) should reduce its natural gas storage capacity to promote competition and help strengthen the country's energy security.

In a joint statement, the two regulators said the conclusion of their investigation showed that Eni's upgrade to the gas storage has been "totally marginal" and insufficient to guarantee Italy's energy security.

To promote competition, Eni should sell to third parties part of its assets to encourage the entry in the market of rivals and reduce its dominance in the sector, the two regulators said.
