Polish natural gas pipeline operator Gaz-System will Monday release a short-list of general contractors eligible to build a planned LNG terminal on the Baltic coast, a unit of Gaz-System said in a statement Friday.

The liquefied natural gas terminal, scheduled for completion in mid-2014 and with an estimated cost of up to EUR700 million, is part of Poland's drive to diversity its potential gas suppliers.

In June, Polish gas distributor PGNiG (PGN.WA) signed a 20-year deal with a Qatar supplier to buy liquified natural gas to be delivered to the terminal when it becomes operational.

With initial capacity to deliver 5 billion cubic meters of gas a year, the terminal will be able to meet about one third of Poland's current annual gas consumption.

Topped up with local gas production, it could radically change the current situation in which Russia accounts for 60% of Poland's gas supply.
