by
moving to a low-carbon economy, U.K. Prime Minister Gordon Brown said Thursday
at the United Nations Copenhagen climate summit.
"We are creating a new source of employment and industry where
Britain
is
well-placed to lead the world," he told Sky News.
"We've got this huge opportunity coming out of a world recession to change
our economies to low-carbon economies," adding that "Britain could
get about half a million new jobs as a result of moving to a low-carbon
economy."
The summit of more than 190 nations has been punctured by mistrust among
countries and is at risk of not even producing a non-binding resolution.
However, Brown said that "I think we are making progress...I think that
there are still difficult issues to be resolved," citing long-term
financing, emissions targets, and the long-term structure for dealing with
climate change problems as topics that all needed to be discussed.
