Polish gas monopoly PGNiG (PGN.WA) will gradually increase its gas purchases from Russia's OAO Gazprom (GAZP.RS), Polish daily Gazeta Wyborcza reports Tuesday.

Citing unnamed sources within PGNiG, the daily says the company will buy around 9 billion cubic meters of gas from Gazprom this year and 9.5 billion cm in 2011. The company earlier said its purchases could rise to the maximum of 10.3 billion cm starting this year.

Gazprom also gave PGNiG a discount on the volumes not covered by a take-or-pay clause, which may give PGNiG total savings of up to $70 million by 2012, the daily said. The figure roughly corresponds with the compensation PGNiG could be entitled to from RosUkrEnergo, a Gazprom-linked gas trader that stopped delivering gas to Poland last year after it was eliminated from the market as a result of a Russian-Ukrainian gas dispute.
