State-run Kuwait Oil Co., or KOC, is preparing a future plan for exploration at deep geological levels with the aim of producing 1.5 million cubic feet a day of natural gas from new discoveries in order to meet local demand, state-run Kuwait News Agency, or Kuna, reports Tuesday, citing an executive.

These layers, called the Khuff and pre-Khuff strata, reach such depths of as much as 7,000 meters in
Kuwait , the news agency reports.

KOC has decided to thoroughly study these geological strata because the world's largest gas fields in
Qatar and Iran are located at similar depths, Ahmad Al Eidan the company's exploration manager, said according to Kuna.

Eidan was talking Tuesday on the occasion of a workshop by the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers organized by his company, the news agency says. The workshop discusses the prospects of natural gas exploration in the
Arabian Peninsula , it adds.
