Electricity demand in Germany fell around 3.7% on the year in the first two months of 2012 due to mild temperatures and weak economic activity abroad, said the country's main energy industry group BDEW Monday.

However, demand for natural gas in the same period rose 6.6% on the year as cold weather in February and an additional leap-year day increased heating consumption, the lobby group added, citing preliminary figures.

The BDEW also said German electricity and gas consumption in 2011 fell in light of a mild summer--which decreased air conditioning usage--and a warm winter that reduced heating consumption.

In 2011, power consumption was down just slightly at 540.8 billion kilowatt-hours, around 0.1% below the 541.1 billion kWh a year earlier.

Demand for natural gas decreased by 13% on the year to 841.6 billion kWh, compared with 966.7 billion kWh a year earlier.

Adjusted for weather effects gas demand fell around 1% on the year, the BDEW added.
