Italian energy firm Eni has discovered an estimated 7-10 trillion ft³ (198.1bn-283bn m³) of gas in place at its Coral 1 exploration prospect in block 4 in the Rovuma basin offshore Mozambique.

The latest discovery increased the total potential of the Mamba complex in block 4 to 47-52 trillion ft³ of gas in place, Eni said today.

The company plans to drill at least another five wells to fully establish the upside potential of block 4.

Similar gas discoveries by US independent Anadarko in block 1 in the Rovuma basin are expected to lead to an LNG development, with first exports potentially in 2018.
