The economic cost of a major nuclear accident at one of France's nuclear
power stations at Dampierre, in central France, could reach EUR5.8 trillion
($7.543 trillion) in a worst-case scenario like the Chernobyl disaster, reports
Le Journal du Dimanche, citing a 2007 report by the French nuclear-safety
institute.
The paper says the report puts the baseline cost of a nuclear
disaster like the one at
Fukushima
in
Japan
at
EUR760 billion, taking into account the impact on tourism and exports. It
quotes the head of the institute as putting the cost of the Fukishima disaster
at EUR1 trillion. It adds that the 2007 report will be updated and made public
later this year.
