Lithuania 's president Friday said she did not expect her country to secure cheaper gas from its sole supplier, Russia 's OAO Gazprom (GAZP.RS), as negotiations have stalled.

"Of course, we have always wanted to reduce the price," Dalia Grybauskaite told journalists at a conference taking place at the
Black Sea coastal resort. "We have tried many times to talk about it, but we got strange answers or no answers and an increase in price."

Both sides said earlier this month that they were moving closer to a new deal that would cut the price
Lithuania pays.

Lithuania has long complained that it overpays for natural gas supplies from Gazprom. Russia has in the past two years offered discounts to a number of customers in Europe , its most lucrative market, amid complaints that prices were too high.

Gazprom CEO Alexei Miller said on Sept. 6 that the company is ready to offer a discount to
Lithuania . A Gazprom spokesman said it doesn't comment on contract negotiations.
